David de Gea is a Spanish goalkeeper who has been playing for Manchester United, for over a decade. He has made several appearances for the Spanish national team at both junior and senior levels and is considered one of the world’s best goalkeepers, De Gea holds more than one-hundred-and-fifty clean sheets to his name.

David de Gea was born on 07 November 1990 in Madrid, but he was raised in Illescas, Toledo. The goalkeeper joined Atletico Madrid’s youth teams at the age of thirteen.

In 2008, De Gea signed his first professional contract with Atletico Madrid four years after joining the club's youth team. A year later, he became the third-choice keeper at the age of eighteen.

The Spaniard made his debut for Atletico’s senior team on 30 September 2009 as a substitute in a UEFA Champions League group stage match against Porto that ultimately ended with a 2-0 loss. However, he made it up to his club by helping them win 2-1 against Real Zaragoza three days later in his La Liga debut.

De Gea’s first season with the senior team ended on a high note. He was part of the squad that defeated Fulham 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League final. The goalkeeper’s ongoing success led to Manchester United expressing interest in acquiring him from the Spanish side.

Rumours of Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest in replacing the retiring Edwin van der Sar started circulating as early as 2010. De Gea’s name came up more than once among sports pundits, although the Spaniard denied any such rumours.

However, Manchester United extended him an offer on 29 June 2011. The deal was worth £18.9 million, a record fee for a goalkeeper at the time.

De Gea’s debut game for Manchester United was a victorious 3-1 friendly match against Chicago Fire. Unfortunately, the Spaniard’s first season at Old Trafford was not entirely successful. He was involved in disastrous matches such as the 3-2 defeat to Blackburn Rovers, and the record 6-1 thrashing Manchester United received from local rivals, Manchester City.

The subsequent seasons were far kinder to De Gea. The Spaniard helped Manchester United win the Premier League in the 2012/13 season. In 2014, he made a spectacular double save against Olympiacos. The Spanish goalkeeper went on to win his first Golden Glove in May 2018.

David De Gea’s contract was renewed for four years in 2019. The deal included an option to extend his term at Manchester United to 2024. A weekly salary of £375,000 per week, or £19,500,000 per year, makes De Gea Manchester United’s highest-earning player. He is also one of the world’s best-paid goalkeepers.

As of January 2023, De Gea is still negotiating this current contract with the club as it is set to finish at the end of the 2022/23 season.

David De Gea’s talents also shone through in the international appearances he made for Spain’s youth teams. He helped the Spanish under-seventeen side win the 2007 European Championship and come in second during the 2007 World Cup.

The rising star’s name was considered when Spain’s 2010 FIFA World Cup squad was assembled. He went on to represent his country at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, as well as at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

David De Gea is a calm and collected footballer who is extremely agile. He has an uncanny skill when it comes to saving goals with his feet. The Spanish keeper has saved goal attempts by legends such as Robin van Persie and Cristiano Ronaldo.
