Gayle King is known as an author, television personality, and a broadcast journalist. She was included into Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2019. Since the debut of the morning program CBS This Morning, King has been the co-host of the program.
Gayle King was born on December 28, 1954, in Chevy Chase, Maryland to her parents Peggy, who was a homemaker, and Scott, an electrical engineer. She spent most of her childhood years in Turkey because her father was stationed there. King returned to United States together with her family, and attended the University of Maryland where she graduated in 1976 with a degree in psychology and sociology.
King was first a production assistant at WJZ-TV. In 1981, she was hired by WSFB and worked as a news anchor for 18 years. She also co-hosted NBC's daytime talk show "Cover to Cover" in 1991, together with Robin Wagner and apparently got canceled after its 13th week. King was offered to host her own talk show "The Gayle Talk Show", in the year 1997 which got cancelled after its one season due to the reason that it has a low ratings.
King also appeared to worked as a special correspondent in the American morning television program "Good Morning America". In 1999, she was an editor in "O, The Oprah Magazine" and co-hosted on XM Satellite Radio the channel "Oprah and Friends". She gained attention after remaining calm despite of R. Kelly's reaction after discussing about the sexual abuse allegations made against the singer, in an interview. She publicly urged for CBS to be full transparent about keeping the findings of sexual harassments and abuse at the network. In 2018, King was also inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame and got chosen in 2019, as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2019.
King has received various nominations and awards, most notably for her journalism. She has received three Emmy Awards, the American Women in Radio and Television Gracie Award, and more. She was honored for her work with educational non-profit organizations at the 2017 Variety's Power of Women.
King married Bill Bumpus, an attorney and an assistant attorney general from 1982 and got divorced in the year 1993 after she caught her husband in bed with another woman. They have a daughter, Kirby, and a son, William Jr. with Oprah Winfrey as their godmother. Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King has been a close friends for decades. The two starred in a video series called "The OG Chronicles" for OprahMag.com.
