George Clooney is an American actor, producer, film director, screenwriter, and philanthropist. He is known for gaining wide recognition in his role on the medical drama ER from 1994 to 1999. He directed several films including the historical drama Good Night, and Good Luck; the political drama The Ides of March; the sports comedy Leatherheads; and the war film The Monuments Men. In 2018, he was the recipient of the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.

Early Life

George Timothy Clooney was born in Lexington, Kentucky on May 6, 1961, to parents Nina Bruce, a beauty queen and council woman, and Nick Clooney, a former anchorman and television host. He has an older sister named Adelia or also known as "Ada".

Clooney has attended several schools when he was still young. He attended Blessed Sacrament School in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky; St. Michael's School in Worthington, Ohio; Western Row Elementary School in Mason, Ohio; and St. Susanna School in Mason, where he used to serve as an altar boy. In middle school, he developed a medical condition called Bell's palsy, that partially paralyzes the face. The disease went away after within a year.

From 1979 to 1981, he attended Northern Kentucky University majoring in broadcast journalism, and shortly attended the University of Cincinnati. Eventually, he did not graduate from either. He was able to earn money by selling women's shoes, stocking shelves, working in construction, insurance door-to-door, and cutting tobacco.

Career

Clooney's first role was as an extra in the 1978 television mini-series, Centennial. In 1984, he got his first major role in the sitcom E/R. He also appeared in several films including the series The Facts of Life (1988), The Golden Girls (1985-1992), Roseanne (1979), Baby Talk (1991-1992), Bodies of Evidence (1992-1993), Sisters (1991-1996), Return of the Killer Tomatoes (1988), and Sunset Beat 919910-1992).

He rose to fame on the NBC medical drama ER, as he played the role of Dr. Doug Ross. The series run from 1994 to 1999. Clooney left the series in 1999, and made a cameo appearance on its 6th season for a guest spot in the show's final season. He received two nominations of Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in the year 1995 and 1996, and received three Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actor - Television Series Drama for year 1995, 1996, and 1997.

Clooney had his first major Hollywood role in the horror comedy-crime thriller, From Dusk till Dawn which was a commercial success. He was then cast on the American superhero film Batman & Robin, where he played the role as "Batman".

He starred in the commercially successful films O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and The Perfect Storm after leaving in the medical drama ER. Clooney played as the lead role for the heist comedy Ocean's Eleven, where the film itself was a successful film earning $451 million worldwide.

Clooney made his directorial debut in 2002 with the film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. The film received critics about his directing skills despite of not doing well at the box office. In 2005, he directed, produced, and starred in the film Good Night, and Good Luck. The film was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the 2006 Academy Awards.

Clooney is involved in Not On Our Watch Project, together with actors Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Jerry Weintraub, and ambassador David Pressman. The organization focuses in global attention and resources to prevent mass atrocities.

On August 7, 2020, George and Amal Clooney donated $100,000 to three Lebanese charities; Red Cross, Impact Lebanon, and Baytna Baytak; after the capital Beirut was devastated by a deadly explosion.

Clooney spoke at a 2006 Save Darfur rally in Washington, D.C. On March 16, 2012, he was arrested for civil disobedience, outside of Sudanese Embassy.

Personal Life

From 1987 to 1989, he dated actress Kelly Preston. Clooney bought a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig as a gift for Preston and named it Max. When their relationship ended, Clooney kept the pig, Max, for 18 years until Max died in 2006.

Clooney was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993. He also dated several actresses like Ginger Lynn Allen, Cameron Diaz, Frances Fisher, Céline Balitran, Charlize Theron, Lucy Liu, British model Lisa Snowdon, Renée Zellweger, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Krista Allen, Linda Thompson, and more.

On April 28, 2014, he became engaged with Amal Alamuddin, a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer. The couple officially married on September 27, 2014 at Ca' Farsetti in Venice, Italy. In 2015, they adopted a rescue dog, a Bassett Hound and named it Millie. On June 6, 2017, Amal gave birth to a twins; daughter, Ella and son, Alexander.

Clooney was raised in a devout Catholic family. At the present, he is now an atheist. He stated in a W magazine interview that he did not believe in God.
