Ice Cube is an American actor, rapper, and filmmaker, who is best known for contributing to gangsta rap's widespread popularity with his lyrics on N.W.A's 1988 album "Straight Outta Compton". In 1986, he formed his first rap group named C.I.A, while on the following year, he formed a pioneering gangsta rap group together with rappers Eazy-E and Dr. Dre.

Cube also co-wrote and starred in the 1995 comedy film, Friday. He made his directorial debut in the 1998 film, The Player's Club.

Early Life

O'Shea Jackson was born on June 15, 1969 in Baldwin Hills, South Central Los Angeles, to parents, Doris and Hosea Jackson. Her mother worked as a hospital clerk and custodian, while his father was a machinist and UCLA groundskeeper. He has an older brother, and had a half-sister, who was murdered when Cube was 12 years old.

He attended George Washington Preparatory High School, in Los Angeles on his ninth grade where he started writing raps, and also William Howard Taft High School in Woodland Hills, California. Cube enrolled in the Phoenix Institute of Technology, and got a diploma in architectural drafting.

Career

Cube started rapping into the trio C.I.A when he was at the age of 16. He formed the rap group C.I.A with friend Sir Jinx, and K-Dee. The rap group released the Dr. Dre produced singles, My Posse, in the year 1987. In 1987, he joined the rap group N.W.A, where he became the lead rapper and main ghostwriter on its official debut album "Straight Outta Compton" in 1988. Cube has also written in most of Eazy-E's debut album "Eazy-Duz-It".

In 1990, he left the group via financial dispute. On the same year, he released his debut album titled "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted", and was leading a featured a rap group, Da Lench Mob. In 1991, his second album "Death Certificate" was released, and thought as more controversial, antisemitic, triggering accusations of anti-white, and misogynist content.

Cube's third and most successful album, "The Predator" was released on November 1992. It was his first album to ever debut at Number 1 on both R&B/hip-hop and pop charts, with more than three million copies sold in the United States.

After his fourth album "Lethal Injection" was released on December 7, 1993, he decided to focus on films and producing albums of other rappers. In 1998, his fifth album "War & Peace Vol. 1 (The War Disc)" was released, and his sixth album, "Volume 2" was released in the year 2000.

Cube released his tenth studio album "Everythang's Corrupt" on 2018. The album's released was delayed despite of releasing a couple songs from it.

Film and Television

In 1991, Cube started acting on John Singleton's film, Boyz n the Hood, playing the character of Doughboy. On the following year, he starred in the thriller film Trespass, together with Ice-T, and Bill Paxton.

He also starred in many films like Higher Learning (1995), Dangerous Ground (1997), Three Kings (1999), All About The Benjamins (2002), Barbershop (2002) and its sequel, Torque (2004), Are We There Yet (2005), 21 Jump Street (2012) and its sequel, Ride Along (2014), Ride Along 2 (2016), and Fist Fight (2017).

Cube co-wrote and starred in the 1995 comedy film "Friday", with comedian Chris Tucker. The film drew $28 million worldwide, and released its sequel and third installment "Next Friday", and "Friday After Next".

Personal Life

Cube married his wife, Kimberly Woodruff, on April 26, 1992. The couple have 4 children together.

In 2015, he expressed regret at including the word "Jew", as attacks on N.W.A's manager Jerry Heller, calling him a "white man", "white Jew", "devil", "white boy", and "cracker". He said that the attacks were only for Heller, not for "the whole Jewish race".
