Early Life

At the early age of five, the very first time he saw a television; it immediately captured Peter Jackson’s young imagination. His obsession to special effects and animation started when he saw the movie “King Kong” at the age of nine.

“It was a Friday evening. I was nine years old, and I was watching King Kong on TV. That night I understood what I will become.” - Peter Jackson

When he received a Super 8 movie camera as a gift from a family friend, Jackson immediately created a short film together with his friends as his actors. He was able to make several short films that he even won a special prize for its notable shots. Jackson has no formal training in film-making, but he learned about editing, special effects and make-up via his own, through trial and error.

At 16 years old, Jackson left school and worked as a full-time photo-engraver for The Evening Post, a Wellington newspaper. Even if he already had a job, Jackson decided not to live on his own so he could save money for his film equipment. After two years of work Jackson bought a 16 mm camera and began shooting a film.

“It’s all about his determination. You never, ever, give up once you start something, once you’re on the trail of something you don’t stop and that’s what you have to go through when you’re making a movie too. Once the train’s rolling, you have to stick with it.” – Peter Jackson.

Peter Jackson's Wife

Peter Jackson got married only once. His one and only partner is Fran Walsh, a screenwriter. Jackson and Walsh had 2 children.

Walsh had helped him gain contacts in the New Zealand film industry. She even contributed a lot to Jackson’s movies ever since, as co-writer and producer. Walsh also received seven Oscar nominations.
