Selena Quintanilla was a singer, model, actress, and spokesperson. She was popularly known as the Queen of Tejano music because of success in the industry. In 1994, she received a Grammy Award for Best Mexican/American Album for Live!. Throughout her career, she sold over 21 million albums. She also endorsed the most selling collection of cosmetics from MAC cosmetics.

Early Life

Selena Quintanilla was born in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16, 1971. She began singing when she was six years old. Their family had a restaurant, where she and her siblings used to perform. Due to the recession in 1980, their family filed for bankruptcy and she had no choice but to sing to earn a living. She became the vocalist of the band Selena y Los Dinos in 1981. Her busy schedule affected her studies; thus, forcing her to leave school when she was in eight grade. She was still able to finish high school at the American School of Correspondence in Chicago. The singer later attended in Pacific Western University and took up business administration.

Quintanilla chose to sign a deal with EMI Latin instead of Sony Music Latin. The request for her crossover album was denied because she is not that famous yet. On October 7, 1989, she released her self-titled debut album.

In May 1992, Quintanilla released Entre a Mi Mundo, her third studio album. It became her breakthrough album. It positioned first on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight months. It sold 600,000 copies; hence, making it a certified 10x platinum. It was the first Tejano album released by a female artist that sold more than 300,000 copies. The album opened lots of opportunities for the singer. She was invited for a border press tour in Monterrey, Mexico. She was booked for various concerts throughout Mexico. Como la Flor was one of the four singles in the album, which helped her topped the Latin music charts and became an instant celebrity.

In March 1994, Quintanilla released her fourth studio album Amor Prohibido. The album ranked 3rd on the US Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and first on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts. The album became the second Tejano album to gain  year-end sales of 500,000 copies. It became a certified 36x platinum for selling 2.16 million copies in the US in 1995, making it one of the best-selling Latin albums in the country. Amor Prohibido earned the Record of the Year and Regional/Mexican Album of the Year at the 1995 Tejanno Music Awards and Lo Nuestro Awards, respectively.

Quintanilla married American guitarist Chris Perez on April 2, 1992. The pair was members of Selena y Los Dinos, in which Perez served as the lead guitarist. Their relationship was not accepted by her father (Abraham Jr.); thus, threatening them to disband the group. The two were not shaken by her father’s threat and continued their relationship. Perez was then fired from the band and forbade her to go with him. Abraham was just concerned that Perez might ruin the career of her daughter. As a solution to her father’s rejection, the couple eloped. Later, her father accepted and loved Perez as his son-in-law.

Selena Quintanilla Death

Quintanilla was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldivar, former president of her fans club and manager of her boutiques, on March 31, 1995. Saldivar shot her on the right lower shoulder, which damaged her right subclavian artery.

Her father had warned her about Saldivar since employees of the boutiques complained about the latter’s misbehavior. She fired Saldivar for her misbehavior and embezzling money. Fans have complained that they paid membership fees but got nothing in return.
