Shakira is a Colombian singer-songwriter, dancer, producer and philanthropist. She was referred to as Queen of Latin music for her versatility in music. Shakira has received numerous awards including Grammy Awards, Latin Grammy Awards, MTV Music Video Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Billboard Latin Award Music, Guinness World Records, Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was also listed as The Top Female Latin Artist of the Decade on Billboard in 2009.

Shakira's Early Life

Shakira was born on February 2, 1977 in Baranquilla, Colombia. She was the only child of Nidia Ripoll Torrado and William Mebarak Chadid. Her birth name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, and "Shakira" means grateful in Arabic, the feminine form of name Shakir. Shakira started to wrote her first poem when she was four years old, as she continue to write, the poems eventually developed as songs. When she was four, her father took her to a local Middle Eastern restaurant, discovered belly dancing, and later on realized that she wanted to be a performer.

Shakira's Career

Shakira's first debut album, Magia, was created when she was only 13 years old in 1990, with Sony Music Colombia. The album did not fare well commercially as it only sold 1,200 copies worldwide. Her second album Peligro was released in March, eventually, it was also considered as commercial failure and later on, decided to take a hiatus from recording so she could focus on her studies and graduate from high school.

In 1995, Shakira returned to recording music under Sony Music and with Colombia  Records. She recorder her song "¿Dónde Estás Corazón?" which was an instant success and Sony decided to finance her third record. Her third studio album Pies Descalzos, was released on October 1996, and reached number five on the US Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and  the album was certified by RIAA as platinum status.

Shakira's second single "Hips Don't Lie" was released on February 2006, reached number one in over 55 countries. In 2007, Shakira worked with Beyonce for the single track "Beautiful Liar" and earned them a nomination for Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. She was named the fourth top-earning female artist in the music industry and signed a $300 million contract with Live Nation. She also collaborated in May 2009, with the South African group, Freshlyground for the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The song was titled "Waka Waka" and became the biggest-selling World Cup song of al time.

In 2016, Shakira voice role in the Disney animated movie Zootopia. She won her third Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album for El Dorado in 2018. She is also well known for her dance moves. Her moves are based on the art of belly dancing and mostly performs barefooted.

Shakira's Personal Life

Shakira began a relationship with Antonio de la Rua in 2000, and got separated in 2010. In April 2013, he sued Shakira after terminating her business partnership with him, and in August, the lawsuit as dismissed by a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge.

In 2011, shakira entered a relationship with Gerard Pique, a Spanish football player, and they had two sons, Milan, the first son, and Sasha the second son.
