Tracy Jamel Morgan was born on November 10, 1968 in the Bronx. His mother, Alicia, was a homemaker while his father, Jimmy, was a musician. He left home when his father returned as a recovering heroin addict from the military duty in the Vietnam War.

Morgan went to DeWitt Clinton High School. His father had contracted AIDS from hypodermic needle use in 1985. He dropped out of school just four credits short to get his diploma to take care of his dying father in 1987. In the same year, he married his girlfriend Sabina.

Already raising a son and struggling to make ends meet, Morgan sold crack cocaine. He began performing comedy on the streets after the death of his best friend. It was his best friend who urged him that he should be doing comedy.

Comedy Career

Morgan’s stand-up comedy career started at the Apollo Theatre and later at the Uptown Comedy Club. He debuted his TV career on Martin as Hustle Man, the neighborhood purveyor of questionable products and services. He became part of the show from 1994 to 1996.

He had his big break when he became a regular cast member of the Saturday Night Live (SNL) from 1996 to 2003. He returned to host the show on March 14, 2009 and a guest appearance for its Christmas show in 2011. SNL is a late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show that premiered in 1975. Several notable comedians also started at SNL including Eddie Murphy and Adam Sandler.

After SNL, Morgan became a cast member of 30 Rock from 2003 to 2013. The satirical sitcom tells the experiences of Tina Fey as head writer for SNL. The show won various major awards including Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series. The series gave him aScreen Actors Guild Awards in 2009.

He had his own sitcom The Tracy Morgan Show, which ran from December 2, 2003 to March 20, 2004. Some of his comedy related appearances were aired in One mic and Punked.

Morgan also appeared in several movies like 30 Years to Life, Little Man, and Cop Out.
