Area code 520 is a North American telephone area code for the region covering Tucson in Arizona and most of the Southern region of the state.  It was created in 1995 when area code 602 was split. Initially, the state of Arizona was served by a single area code 602 that was created in 1947. As the state's population expanded it was clear that it needed a second area code. This is what informed the creation of the 520 area code.

From 1995 to 2001 area code served all of the areas of the state except for the Phoenix metropolitan area which had retained the 602 area code. However, the proliferation of mobile phones and pagers as a result of the dot-com boom and the expansion of many urban areas within the state led to the creation of the 928 area code to serve northern areas of the state. The area code 520 was retained to serve all of Santa Cruz,   Cochise, and Pima counties.
