Area code 818 was put into service as split from area code 213 on January 7, 1984. Splits occur when a specific area code’s geographic area grows drastically in population leading to high demand for telephone numbers. The existing area code becomes overloaded and is split by dividing the area geographically. A new area code is then added to supplement the original. In 1997, the 818 area code itself was split to create area code 626. Area code 626 was then used primarily to cover the San Gabriel Valley, while the 818 area code remained for the San Fernando Valley. In 2009, the overlay area code 747 was put into service. An area code overlay is a plan that assigns multiple area codes to one geographic region, typically with high populations.

The 818 area code is part of the North American Numbering Plan. The NANP is a telephone numbering system that serves North American countries, including but not limited to:

  • U.S. and territories
  • Bermuda
  • Canada
  • Anguilla
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • The Bahamas
  • The British Virgin Islands
  • The Cayman Islands
  • The Dominican Republic
  • Grenada
  • Turks and Caicos

The North American Numbering Plan was developed by AT&T in 1947. The goal was to simplify direct dialing of long-distance calls. The plan wasn’t officially implemented until 1951. The NANP area was assigned the country code “1” by the International Telecommunications Union.

NANP numbers are ten-digit phone numbers, with a 3-digit NPA code, which is what we commonly refer to as the area code. The area code is then followed by a seven-digit local number. The NXX is known as the central office code.
