Life of Jorginho

Jorginho was born in Imbituba, Santa Catarina in Brazil, on the 20th of December 1991. With his Italian lineage from his paternal great-grandfather, he holds both Italian and Brazilian citizenship. When he was younger, Jorginho’s mother was the one who encouraged and supported his passion for football.

Jorginho began as a youth player with Hellas Verona, a professional football club in Italy. He was loaned out in 2010 to Sambonifacese which was where he spent his first full season as a senior player. Jorginho came back and made his debut for Verona's senior team on September 4, 2011, as a substitute in the 76th minute of a match against Sassuolo.

The midfielder went on to join Napoli for four and a half years as part of a co-ownership deal with Hellas Verona in January 2014. In the following month, he scored the last goal to beat Roma 3-2 and move on to the 2014 Coppa Italia Final where he played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 win against Florentina.

Next in Jorginho’s career was a £50,000,000 move to Premier League club Chelsea, where he made his debut in a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Community Shield. In his first-ever Premier League match, he scored his first goal for Chelsea from the spot against Huddersfield Town in a 3-0 win. Jorginho made a total of 213 impressive appearances and 29 goals, with many of them coming from penalties.

On the 31st of January 2023, Jorginho signed for Arsenal on an 18-month contract worth £12,000,000. He made his debut as a substitute in the 59th minute of a 1-0 defeat against Everton.

While at Napoli, Jorginho began to express interest in representing Italy on the international level. He had already made his debut for Italy’s U-21 team in 2012 and so, in March 2016, he was first called up to the country’s senior squad. Jorginho made his senior debut as a last-minute substitute in an international friendly against Spain. He scored his first international goal from a penalty against Poland in Italy’s first UEFA Nations League match which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Jorginho’s Style of Play

Jorginho is a skilled central midfielder known for his passing accuracy, vision, tactical intelligence, and awareness. His versatility on the field allows him to play in any midfield position whether it's as a box-to-box player or defensive midfielder.

His usual role in a game has been described as both a regista and a metodista. The former describes his role as a deep-lying playmaker who can make use of his precise and horizontal passing to dictate the tempo of his team’s play. On the other hand, Jorginho earned the metodista label thanks to his talented ability to control the play in midfield while also assisting defensively.
