For the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar, Matt Turner was selected to play as the number-one keeper for the United States. Turner became the first US goalkeeper to achieve multiple clean sheets in a single FIFA World Cup edition since 1930 keeping two throughout the tournament.

Matt Turner, or Matthew Charles Turner, was born in Park Ridge, New Jersey, United States, on June 24, 1994. When his parents were immigrating to the United States, their original surname, “Turnovski”, was anglicized to “Turner” in Ellis Island.

For the 2016/2017 season, he joined the United Soccer League club, the Richmond Kickers on loan. On April 30, he made his professional debut for the club against Toronto FC II where the team managed to secure a 1-0 victory. During his time on loan with the Kickers, Turner managed a record of seven clean sheets in 27 starts.

In the season that followed, Turner continued to impress and received numerous awards for his performances. One notable reward was when he was named 2021 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, making him the first goalkeeper in New England Revolution history to achieve this.
